Gigi is a musical adaptation of Colette’s classic story about a young girl in turn-of-the-century Paris, raised to become a courtesan in high society but longing instead for love and marriage. Gaston, a Parisian playboy, shares a carefree, platonic friendship with Gigi—but when their relationship begins to change, they must both confront whether something lasting and real could be possible between them. The film was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Musical Score, and won all nine, a record at the time. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, the film starred Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, and Louis Jourdan, with songs by Lerner and Loewe.
