The Automat tells the story of the iconic and beloved Horn & Hardart restaurant chain in New York City and Philadelphia, which opened in 1888 and served affordable home-style comfort food to millions. The concept was simple yet revolutionary; pop a nickel into a slot, and open the door to obtain your food selection, including both hot and cold entrées, desserts, and beverages. This nostalgic documentary includes archival footage and photographs, and a cast including celebrity customers, such as Mel Brooks, Colin Powell, and Carl Reiner.
