Program Description

Event Details

More than 30 years before Southampton's founders arrived at Conscience Point in 1640, Henry Hudson was exploring under the Dutch Flag, enabling The Netherlands to establish its stake in the New World.  That the English would eventually prevail over the Dutch on Long Island was not a foregone conclusion but, in the end, the New Netherland colony survived for less than four decades while Southampton is celebrating its 380th year.  The legacy of the Dutch has nevertheless endured in architecture, language and culture on much of the island.  In her talk, Professor Naylor will help us to see and appreciate the extent of that legacy.
