Lena Horne is an iconic figure whose life is an interesting reflection of her era. Born into an upper-middle-class community in Brooklyn, her mother took her away from that life and pushed her into the chorus of the Cotton Club at age sixteen. She was maneuvered into a film career and became the first African American signed to a long-term studio contract. Horne reached legendary status in the entertainment world, and her music clearly defines “what becomes a legend most.” This presentation will examine the lady, her life, and her music, from Brooklyn to the Cotton Club, to Hollywood, Broadway, and television.
